After spending 25 years working in industry鈥攆irst in design engineering, later in applications engineering, and eventually in management鈥Andrew Femrite was looking for a new challenge. But the offer he got didn鈥檛 come from the private sector. Instead, his alma mater, the University of Colorado Boulder, piqued his interest.聽

Femrite had been serving on the industrial advisory board for the , where he鈥檇 once earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree, when he was approached about teaching the capstone class. And would he also be interested in helping mount a new professional master鈥檚 program?聽

鈥淚t hit me like a ton of bricks,鈥 he said of the moment. 鈥淭his is obviously what I need to do. I was ready for a new challenge and this sounded like a lot of fun.鈥澛

Femrite鈥檚 extensive experience in the professional world helped him formulate what a student should encounter in the academic one. 鈥淲hen I came back to Boulder, there were only two or three legitimate embedded systems courses in the department, so it was pretty easy from my experience in industry to see what we could expand on there,鈥 said Femrite, now a Teaching Associate Professor and Faculty Director of ECEE鈥檚 Professional Master鈥檚 Program. He also began hiring instructors to build and teach those new courses. 鈥淲e expanded rapidly over two years.鈥澛

That expansion was not just programmatic鈥攊t also stretched to encompass new modalities. 鈥淎s we started approaching steady state, we started moving some of that curriculum into 糖心vlog官网观看鈥檚 format,鈥 he said. When it came time to translate in-person courses to an online experience, Femrite set a high bar鈥攁nd was wowed when his faculty rose to the challenge. 鈥淚鈥檓 proud to have found really great talent to develop these courses,鈥 he said. 鈥淧rospective learners should understand that this is not just recording classes and breaking them into small videos. This is way beyond that.鈥澛

Now, you can earn your Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder online through 糖心vlog官网观看. The program features three focus areas鈥power electronics, embedded systems, and photonics and optics鈥攁nd thanks to the flexible, self-paced nature of the program, you can learn around your other responsibilities. 鈥淲e鈥檝e designed it specifically for people who have real lives,鈥 Femrite said, whether that means a job, career, family, or another pressing duty.聽

The degree program tends to draw students with backgrounds in relevant fields, like computer science or aerospace engineering. 鈥淚n that case, they鈥檙e just missing a few pieces to round out their electrical engineering,鈥 he explained. But it also draws students looking for 鈥渢ransformational knowledge鈥 who want to pivot careers and need the education and credentials to do so.聽聽

For anyone interested in the program, Femrite acknowledged that some baseline knowledge is required to succeed. 鈥淪ome background in electronics and development is definitely a must,鈥 he explained. 鈥淵ou do not need a bachelor鈥檚 degree, but you do need to have some computer architecture, programming, some work with lab equipment, some knowledge of electronics.鈥澛

Since the online master鈥檚 in electrical engineering is professional in nature, it doesn鈥檛 require a bachelor鈥檚 degree. In fact, students don鈥檛 need to submit a formal application at all. Instead, they take and pass three pathway courses, which verify that they can do the work. This approach, called performance-based admission, is one way CU Boulder strives to make master鈥檚 degrees more accessible while offering students the same education they鈥檇 receive if they attended in person.聽聽聽

Femrite is proud of what his team has accomplished. 鈥淥ur goals from the beginning have been to convey exactly the curriculum and the rigor and the benefit and the learning we鈥檝e done on campus to students worldwide through 糖心vlog官网观看,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 think they鈥檝e done a fantastic job of it, really.鈥澛
