鈥楢 Bucket List To-Do鈥: One Student鈥檚 Path to a Master鈥檚 Degree in Engineering Management

Written by Amanda Wicks 鈥 Updated on

First-generation college student Rob Jaworski has always wanted to earn his master鈥檚 degree. It took the University of Colorado Boulder鈥檚 flexible online master鈥檚 program to make his dream a reality.

Rob Jaworski, a student in the University of Colorado Boulder鈥檚 Master of Engineering in Engineering Management online program, has always wanted to earn his master鈥檚 degree. 鈥淢y sister and I were the first in our family to go and finish college,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 want to be the first one to get a master鈥檚.鈥

What started as a 鈥渂ucket list to-do鈥 eventually became a practical goal given the changing credentials in the tech industry. 鈥淚 feel like everyone is kind of leveling up these days,鈥 he said. 鈥淓verybody I work with鈥攅veryone who鈥檚 younger than me鈥攋ust about all of them have completed their master鈥檚. It鈥檚 good to keep your edge sharp.鈥澛

But as can often happen with a larger goal, the timing never fell into place. After earning his bachelor鈥檚 degree in 鈥渆ssentially what could be described as technical management,鈥 Jaworski dove straight into his career. He began working in engineering and software management at smaller software companies before eventually landing at the software giant Adobe, where he鈥檚 been for over 19 years.聽

It wasn鈥檛 just the demands of his career that made the thought of going back to school feel daunting. Jaworski and his wife have two children. Between his family responsibilities and his professional ones, education always felt like a goal he could never quite prioritize. How could he possibly balance all of those competing demands?聽

In 2009, Jaworski seriously considered earning his Master of Business Administration (MBA). He even purchased a GMAT prep book to study for the entrance exam that most graduate business programs require, but the introductory matter 鈥渟topped him cold.鈥 It advised knowing what you want to do with an MBA before pursuing one. 鈥淚 had no clue,鈥 he recalled. 鈥淎t the time, I didn鈥檛 want to become a project manager, I didn鈥檛 want to go into finance, I didn鈥檛 want to do the entrepreneurship thing. I didn鈥檛 have a good answer.鈥澛

That tabled the matter for a bit. Then, a few years later, Jaworski began seeing more programs for software management, which felt closer to the kind of education he should earn to continue advancing in his career. But the program requirements were rigid. For starters, Jaworski would have faced a 30- to 45-minute commute each way. Then, there was the timeline. 鈥淭hey wanted you to be done in two years,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 had a not-quite-one-year-old at home, plus a five-year-old. It wasn鈥檛 the right time in my life to commit so intensely.鈥澛

He eventually came across the University of Colorado Boulder鈥檚 Master of Engineering in Engineering Management (ME-EM) program offered online through 糖心vlog官网观看. 鈥淚 thought, 鈥榃ow, this actually looks good.鈥 I attended one of the information sessions and figured, 鈥榊eah, this ticks all the boxes.鈥欌澛犅

CU Boulder鈥檚 online master鈥檚 degrees offer performance-based admission, which entails taking three pathway courses in a related subject鈥攍ike finance, project management, or principles of leadership in the case of the ME-EM degree. If you pass all three courses, you gain full admission to the program and that coursework counts toward your degree progress. It鈥檚 a way to make advanced education more accessible and more equitable鈥攚ithout formal applications, letters of recommendation, or college entrance scores, which can often be timely and costly to pull together.聽

Jaworski did the Finance for Technical Managers pathway. 鈥淚t was probably my best experience so far,鈥澛 he explained. 鈥淚 found the material to be interesting, and I also think the instructor did a really good job.鈥 What he learned wasn鈥檛 just theoretical in nature. He found himself applying what he was learning at work. 鈥淚 deal with external vendors and we need to pay them, and sometimes we need to do justifications on return-on-investment,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 was like, 鈥榃ow, we鈥檙e talking about this right now in class.鈥 I was able to apply it right away.鈥澛

The ME-EM degree program dovetails neatly with what Jaworski learned as an undergrad, but so much has happened in the years since that he feels as though he鈥檚 getting a much-needed refresh. 鈥淭here鈥檚 so much new stuff that鈥檚 happened over the last couple of decades that I didn鈥檛 get exposure to back then or that didn鈥檛 exist before, like software development methodologies,鈥 he said. 鈥淟earning that more formally in this kind of setting gives you different perspectives on it.鈥澛

In a funny bit of timing, Jaworski may end up graduating the same year as his oldest daughter, who鈥檚 earning her bachelor鈥檚 degree at San Diego State. He鈥檚 already laughing about the possibility. 鈥淚f it turns out that way, then we鈥檙e going to go to San Diego for her commencement,鈥 he said, 鈥渁nd then immediately go to Boulder for mine.鈥澛犅
