About the Course

There鈥檚 a songwriter lurking somewhere inside you, peeking around corners, wondering if it鈥檚 safe to come out. Now it is. This course is an invitation to let your inner songwriter step into the sunlight. All it takes is a simple 鈥測es鈥� and you鈥檒l be climbing that windy hill, marveling at the view. If you haven鈥檛 written any or many songs, this course will show you an efficient, effective process for tailoring songs to express your ideas and emotions. If you have, you鈥檒l look at your process differently, taking control of aspects of the process you may have not noticed. The course will start by examining the tools available to you, all revolving around the essential concept of prosody. You鈥檒l learn to use your tools to enhance your message鈥攖o work compositionally at the same time you鈥檙e developing your ideas. You鈥檒l be working both lyrically and musically, though musically it鈥檚 not necessary that you either read music or play an instrument. If you play, great, and you鈥檒l be encouraged to play and record your musical responses to the assignments. If you don鈥檛 play, the course offers you a number of musical loops to work with. All you鈥檒l have to do is sing your melodies over the loops. Assignments will ask you to post something for peer review鈥攕ometimes lyric lines or sections, sometimes melodies, sometimes both. None of it has to be polished. The course is about writing, not performing. Most important, you鈥檒l have a lot of fun....

I really found this course extremely helpful. Thank you. I loved the course, love Pat's teaching, have been to a couple of his seminars in Melbourne, Australia. I have three of his books and found that this course just made me do al the things I've read and heard him talk about. The only reason I didn't give it 5/5 stars - which I think it is worth - is at the very end (Week 6) I had a peer review from someone whom I don't think understood enough about what they were supposed to know! They failed me, whereas upon submitting exactly the same submission was given 65/65. I had also been given 65/65 from someone the week before in Week 5. I found that frustrating, knowing I had spent time working on the very things the assignment was aimed at ... BUT GREAT COURSE - not sure if anything can be done a bout that final week... THANKS again!
