The idea of a 鈥渂orn leader鈥� is something of a misnomer. While some people may have an instinctive idea about how to shepherd projects or people toward effective outcomes, more often than not, leadership is a skill you have to develop鈥攁nd strengthen鈥攍ike any other. Abiera earned his bachelor鈥檚 in mechanical engineering and spent the early phase of his career oscillating between working in manufacturing and the research & development phase of mechanical design. Then, he began managing teams.聽

鈥淵ou see good managers,鈥� Abiera said. 鈥淵ou also see ineffective managers.鈥� He鈥檚 had both and didn鈥檛 want to fall into the latter category. 鈥淚 wanted to be able to have the fundamentals of what鈥檚 being taught out there, and then mix that in with what I鈥檝e seen to be effective from the managers I鈥檝e had.鈥澛�

Abiera began thinking about earning his master鈥檚 in engineering management. With a degree program, he could learn the fundamentals he deemed so important while continuing to work full-time. 鈥淚 wanted to make sure that I was able to finish the program without destroying my life,鈥� he said with a laugh.

As he set about researching and applying to various programs, the University of Colorado Boulder鈥檚 Master of Engineering in Engineering Management rose to the top of Abiera鈥檚 options. 鈥淚 really put a lot of thought into it,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 could have afforded other programs, but I wanted to support a program that鈥檚 making education accessible for a lot of people.鈥澛�

Abiera believes in 鈥減roliferating knowledge鈥� because when he was younger even a bachelor鈥檚 degree felt out of reach. 鈥淚 come from a very poor background,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 meant to have a degree.鈥� CU Boulder鈥檚 performance-based admission aims to create greater educational parity, and it became a big draw for Abiera. 鈥淪ome of the best engineers I know were rocking 2.0 GPAs from college,鈥� he explained. 鈥淏ut they wouldn鈥檛 be able to get into master鈥檚 programs, even though they鈥檙e amazing engineers.鈥澛�

Performance-based admission looks to see what potential students know. Rather than submit a more formal application with letters of recommendation and transcripts, applicants gain admittance to the full Master of Engineering program if they pass three pathway courses in either finance or project management. 鈥淚 personally think that testing and GPAs are antiquated,鈥� Abiera said. 鈥淚 want to be able to support CU Boulder and other programs that basically ease the access to education so I can see more people like myself,鈥� he said.

Abiera took the Finance for Technical Managers courses as his pathway and immediately began applying what he was learning to his team. 鈥淚 actually internalized it,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 teach it with my team. If you work in manufacturing, you need to know the other side too. You鈥檙e not just designing; you鈥檝e got to know the business side of things.鈥澛�

Balancing a full-time job and a master鈥檚 degree program takes commitment, though. Abiera dedicates his weekends to coursework. If he needs more time, he allocates certain weeknights to school. Thanks to CU Boulder鈥檚 online curriculum, Abiera can take as many courses as he can handle at a time. 鈥淭he self-pacing is actually really nice for the program,鈥� he said.聽

Although Abiera is already managing a team of engineers, he鈥檚 excited about formalizing his ability to do so through his master鈥檚 degree with CU Boulder. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the people development side of things,鈥� he said about what he enjoys the most. 鈥淚 love being able to trust in my team to do bigger and bigger things, so I spend a lot of time on people and their personal development. It鈥檚 an investment in them, and for myself, for the company. If the individuals on my team get stronger then my whole team is stronger. We can do more.鈥澛�
